On Monday 1st July, it was announced that not one but two online gaming operators had secured entry into the Spanish online gaming market. Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) and rival LeoVegas were both granted licences to operate in Spain by the local gambling regulator Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ).

Rizk Brand

GiG aims to enter the market alongside its flagship Rizk brand, which is expected in the fourth quarter of 2019, with plans to grow by 2020. Its licences approve the operator to offer sportsbook betting and online casino services via its proprietary gaming platform in Spain, as well as sell these on to third parties.

LeoVegas is also approved to provide online casino and sportsbook betting and is working hard to get its new Spanish site and mobile gaming opportunities underway as soon as possible. Despite just 13% of all gaming in Spain carried out online, LeoVegas intends to change this with its state-of-the-art mobile gaming technology.

In a press release, GiG CEO Robin Reed was quoted as saying,

We are delighted to be awarded the Spanish licences and are looking forward to serving the market with our top performing operator Rizk and our full suite of B2C and B2B products and solutions.

He stated that the entry will help GiG position themselves in a select number of B2C markets, and seal their plans to be seen as a “global operator and partner for strong brands in iGaming” with B2B partnerships, potentially opening up access to the Latin American markets.

Leo Vegas Comment

LeoVegas has already been tapping into South American markets; CEO Gustaf Hagman stated:

The Spanish license is an important step in our continued expansion, in other Spanish-speaking countries, where we have already conducted test launches in Peru and Chile.

The Spanish market is currently worth an estimated 1 billion Euros, with both operators referencing the fact that Spain’s gambling market is the fastest growing in Europe. The market has been experiencing a 20% growth annually, making it an important part of any online casino operator’s plans for expansion.

With Spain proving fertile grounds for online casino providers, we can expect more licences to be granted in the not too distant future.
