There was some disappointing news for the poker gambling community recently. The gaming supplier giant, Microgaming, will shut down its Microgaming Poker Network (MPN), formerly known as Prima Poker, after more than sixteen years, in 2020.

The network allows users to engage in multiplayer poker games against other players in real-time. The games include Five and Seven Card Stud Poker and Texas Hold ‘Em.

Microgaming Moving Resources

The Isle of Man based software development company announced the news this month that it will close its doors on this particular software later next year. The company is one of the leading online gambling competitors on the market, which is why this announcement came as a shock to many.

In a statement, Microgaming CEO, John Cole, said;

The network model no longer fits with our strategic vision for poker, and this is the right time to announce the closure as we focus on redistributing key resources and personnel across the business.”

The MPN was one of the first online poker networks to offer users ‘Anonymous Tables’, making it a huge competitor from the very start in March 2003 in the online gambling community.

Therefore, the decision to shut down one of its longest-standing networks would not have been taken lightly.

New Focus On Slots?

With that being said, Microgaming is consistently developing and upgrading, which we have seen over the years. John Cole states that “while the network will be closing, this is not the end for poker at Microgaming, which is driven to create the most enjoyable entertainment experiences.”

We know that this closure isn’t the end of poker at Microgaming altogether, which poses the question: what’s next?

How will this gambling giant improve poker for its players?

It is assumed from the CEO’s statement that Microgaming has a plan to rejuvenate its poker network and rebrand it into something more spectacular and immersive than it was before. This change will;

ultimately…help the business to achieve that vision as [they] follow a new strategic direction for the vertical, details of which will be revealed in due course.”
