While the global lockdown has been a thorn in the side of many industries during the first half of 2020, the online casino market has been one of the exceptions to the trend. Customer bases have grown as internet users look for new ways to entertain themselves indoors.

Now, with the return of live sport, the sports betting market is back to rival online casinos as a source of excitement online – but according to one expert, online casinos are in a good position to continue their impressive performance in recent months, despite the series of sports fixtures which have been given the go-ahead.

Speaking to the SBC News platform, Boris Chaikin, the CEO of online casino development Soft2Bet, suggested that upcoming football, boxing and cricket fixtures would not be the cause of a massive drop in online casino traffic.

He explained: “Casino traffic will be lower but not because of the return of live sports. When people resume their usual lives, they will no longer have the leisure time available during lockdown to enjoy online casino entertainment.

Budgets could be constrained too, due to the anticipated economic consequences of the pandemic and job pause experienced by a significant proportion of the population.

The Bundesliga became the first of Europe’s major football leagues to return following the lockdown in May, and has since been joined back in action by England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga and Italy’s Serie A, giving sports betting fans a wealth of wagering options to rival online casino offerings. France’s Ligue 1 made the decision to cancel its season.

Chaikin also expressed his belief that the online casino games market will start to diversify more rapidly, in order to cater for the wider cross-section of interests which are possessed by a new customer base which has been attracted during the lockdown.

There is also evidence to suggest that regular gamblers are searching for new online platforms to enjoy. A poll conducted by Survation found that 41 per cent of people had signed up for a new online account since the lockdown came into force.
