Greece Revamps Its Decades-old Gambling Industry Regulations
Greece has become an exciting market to watch for online gambling companies. The Hellenic Gaming Commission has recently made two types of licenses available. This updated version of the Greek online gaming market officially opened in August 2021.
This overhaul of previous legislation is part of a larger plan that Greece is putting into action. They are hoping to drive revenues and become more financially solvent. However, the new online gambling legislation was packaged in the sweeping Invest in Greece proposal. This package included legislation to streamline environmental and planning regulations as well.
Currently, online gambling is restricted to those who are 21 and older. Additionally, there are a number of other restrictions and rules in place. These regulations are intended to make online gambling as safe as possible for Greek players. The HGC has imposed a maximum stake of €2. However, other rules include a cap of €5,000 for prizes and €50,000 for jackpots.
There has been criticism from the International Betting Integrity Association on the proposed regulations. The IBIA felt that the rules were too restrictive and would deter companies from obtaining licenses. However, these restrictions have not slowed interest in entering the Greek market.
