Bancontact is co-branded with Maestro, a leading provider of debit cards via banks as well as a provider of online payment facilities. Payments are made using a Bancontact debit card, in the same way as Visa or Mastercard debit cards.

Bancontact has been around since the late 1980s as a payment method, although it has limited popularity outside of Belgium. That said, there are still a number of casinos who accept it.

Creating an Account

In order to create a Bancontact account, it’s first necessary to have a bank account which offers a Bancontact debit card. This usually means opening a Belgian bank account, which is normally limited to Belgian residents.

The following banks issue Bancontact debit cards:

  • KBC
  • AXA Bank
  • Fortis Bank
  • VDK
  • Belfius Bank
  • ING Bank
  • CNC
  • Fintro

In most cases, a debit card is issued as part of the benefits that the bank offers its customers. Some customers may have to specifically request a Bancontact debit card, but this isn’t usual. Once a debit card has been obtained, it can be used in the same way as any debit card at casinos that accept Bancontact as a payment method.

Deposits and Withdrawals

It’s worth remembering that not all casinos accept Bancontact debit cards as payments. For this reason, before registering with a casino, check the deposit and withdrawal options offered. If the casino will accept this method of payment, you will need to register in the usual manner. As soon as the registration process is complete, you should be able to deposit funds using the Bancontact debit card.

Deposits using a Bancontact card are completed in the same way as making a deposit with a Visa or Maestro card, Usually, you will need to enter the card number along with the expiry date, your name and the security code found on the back of the card. Once this process has been completed, funds will be transferred into the casino’s account almost immediately.

When it comes to withdrawals, it’s worth bearing in mind that not all casinos allow withdrawals onto a card. If the casino you’ve chosen allows card withdrawals, follow the instructions for this purpose. Note that some casinos will need a day or so to process withdrawals.

Depending on the withdrawal amount, customers may need to submit additional ID or other information before the withdrawal can be authorised. Some casinos may charge for withdrawing onto a Bancontact card, although the majority don’t demand payment for withdrawal onto a card.

The company itself doesn’t set a limit on the amount of cash that can be deposited or withdrawn in a single transaction or over a specific time period. That said, the bank to which the Bancontact card is registered may operate limits, depending on the type of account or individual financial circumstances. Some casinos also set limits on daily, weekly or monthly withdrawal limits for security purposes or to reduce the risk of money laundering.

Advantages

  • Security: Bancontact debit cards are a secure form of payment. Provided an SSL-secured casino site is used, there is minimal risk of the debit card being used fraudulently. Debit cards can be traced back to the bank from which they’re issued, so there is less risk of them being used for money laundering purposes.
  • Control of finances: Users can only deposit using Bancontact when there are actually funds in their account to allow them to do so. Some gamblers prefer to limit the amount of cash they have available for play, helping them to minimise the risk of betting more than they can afford.
  • Range of currencies: Users can pay using their local currency.
  • Ease of setup: The process for using Bancontact is straightforward. Anyone who has registered a debit card will be at ease with the format and information needed to set up Bancontact as a method of payment.

Disadvantages

The Bancontact card is predominantly used in Belgium. Outside of the country, its use is strictly limited. This means that many international casinos don’t accept it as a payment method, potentially limiting user choice. If you’re not a Belgian resident, a Bancontact debit card is likely to be of limited use.

Support

Bancontact cards are issued by banks in the same way as a Maestro or Visa card might be, so if users have any issues, their recourse in the first instance is usually to their bank. Bancontact cards aren’t credit cards, so cardholders don’t usually have any dealings with the company directly. If people do want to get in contact with Bancontact, there is an online contact form on the website which can be completed.

Company

Bancontact is one of the main providers of electronic payment methods in Belgium. It is estimated that there are currently more than 15 million cardholders. Transactions are protected by 3D-secure, which ensures safe use. Belgian casinos that accept Bancontact are quite common. In addition, several casinos with a broader, European audience will accept Bancontact cards for payment.
