An Introduction to Four Card Poker

For fans of Three Card Poker, the basic premise for Four Card Poker is similar but with two significant differences. First of all, as the name implies, you must make a four card hand, rather than thre. But while the former only allows for wagers to equal the ante, in the latter you can bet up to 3x the ante.

This increasingly popular poker game uses a standard 52 deck of cards which is shuffled in between game rounds. Players go head-to-head with the dealer to win the best four-card hand and the dealer automatically qualifies for each round.

Rules of Four Card Poker

As with other poker game variants such as Trey Poker, the basic principles for Four Card Poker are pretty similar. Understanding the various poker hands is key to successful gameplay.

Don’t worry, if you’re not overly familiar with the ins and outs, we’ll go through the Four Card Poker rules in full. You’ll soon know your flushes from your straights and be playing like a pro!  Let’s start with the basics:

  • In Four Card Poker, players are dealt five cards;
  • The Dealer receives six cards, five of which are face-down;
  • Cards are dealt after all bets are placed;
  • The Aces Up bet is optional and may only be placed after the Ante bet and before the cards are dealt
  • If the player has a better four card hand or both hands are tied, the Ante and Play bets payout 1 to 1;
  • The Aces Up bet is evaluated regardless of whether the player makes a play bet or folds;
  • Should the dealer have a better four card hand, the player loses both of their Play and Ante bets;
  • If the player has any hands required for the Ante Bonus and a Play bet has been made, they will receive a payout regardless of the dealer’s hand.

Player Options

Each player places an Ante bet in anticipation that they have a better hand than the dealer. Players are dealt five cards (and the dealer six) in which to make the best four-card hand.

After looking at your cards, you have the option to Fold or Play. To stay in the game you will need to select the Play bet and wager either 1x or 3x the Ante bet.

The dealer only reveals their hand once action has been taken on your hand. If your hand beats or ties with the dealer’s, both the Ante and Play bets pay out at 1 to 1.

Hand Rankings

So how do you know if you have a good hand? That comes down to the various Four Card Poker hand rankings below, listed from high to low:

  • Four of a Kind. Four cards of the same rank;
  • Straight Flush. Cards in sequential rank and of the same suit;
  • Three of a Kind. Three cards of the same rank;
  • Flush. Four cards of the same suit;
  • Straight. Cards of sequential rank in at least two different suits;
  • Two Pair. Two matching sets of two cards of the same rank;
  • Pair. Two cards of the same rank;
  • High Card. Where none of the above hands can be formed, the highest ranked card is counted.

Ante Bonus

An automatic bonus will be paid for making one of the top three ranking hands. You receive the payout whether or not you beat the dealer’s hand.

Payouts for the Ante Bonus:

  • Four of a Kind: 25 to 1;
  • Straight Flush: 20 to 1;
  • Three of a Kind: 2 to 1.

Aces Up Bet

Similar to the Ante Bonus, the Aces Up payouts will be made regardless of the dealer’s hand. So, even if you lose your Ante bet, you still receive your Aces Up bet payout.

  • Four of a Kind: 50 to 1;
  • Straight Flush: 30 to 1;
  • Three of a Kind: 7 to 1;

Gameplay Procedure

Now that we’ve explored the Four Card Poker rules, let’s take a walk through the gameplay:

  • Place Your Bets. First you must select your Ante bet from 0.10 to 100 credits. Next you need to decide whether or not to place an optional Aces Up bet.
  • Deal The Cards. You will receive five face-up cards, while the dealer receives five face-down and one upturned.
  • Player Action. Now you need to decide whether to Fold or Play based on your hand and the dealer’s upturned card.
  • Up the Ante. If you choose to play, you must wager either 1x or 3x your Ante bet.
  • Dealer Reveals. The dealer’s cards are revealed and the best four-card hand made.
  • Result. Payouts are made according to who has the highest ranked hand. If you beat the dealer or tie then you receive 1 to 1 on your Ante and Play bets.

As you can see from the above live casino game round, only one player hand is dealt. This enables an unlimited number of online players to gamble on the same hand.
