An Introduction to the Outlaw Slot

We’ve seen cool Wild West-themed online slots for decades in the industry including titles like Wild Showdown. Additionally, popular titles in the sub-genre go back before the Internet even existed. However, Big Time Gaming brought a ton of action in the Outlaw video slot in a way that many other titles miss out on.

Outlaw Main Screen
Outlaw Main Screen

That’s because some developers forget that action and suspense are major factors in this setting.

We can see BTG paying attention to this even in the presentation of the game. If you check out the background, it’s out in the mesa-filled desert where many classic Western films were supposed to happen. This is critical because you could never tell what might be behind these structures. Additionally, the graphics and drawing style are top-tier in and of themselves. This goes for the symbols on the reels, the game information screens and the background as well.

As great as this title looks, the play style and feature set stand out a lot too. For us, a big part of this is the numerous features available. This gives players a variety of ways to win some pretty substantial payouts. However, even though the features bring plenty of value, the regular game mode stands out quite a bit as well. That’s largely because of how the Megaways format was leveraged. Instead of only having it standing by itself, little extras were added in to make it even more value-packed. As a result, the hit-rate is high, and you can win a variety of payouts at different levels.

Betting and Layout

The first thing we feel the need to point out with the format of this game is that it’s not as complicated as it looks. On the far left and far right, the reels are positioned in a way that it looks like saloon doors. However, don’t let this throw you off. They’re really just normal reels as a part of the game as a whole.

With that in mind, here’s a look at what we think players should know when they get started.

  • Despite the positioning being atypical (see above), this game has six straightforward reels.
  • On each reel, you will randomly see between two and seven symbols each spin.
  • Payouts are determined primarily by getting matching symbols on consecutive reels. However, this has to be on reels that run from left to right.
  • However, keep in mind that the positions of those symbols aren’t important.
  • The lowest bet size available is €0.10 per turn, and the bet sizes go up to the €15 level for each spin.
  • Note also that Big Time Gaming included a lot of different increments. This makes it easier to pick out a bet size that works well for you.

Other Information

Volatility can vary a lot based on the format, features and other factors of an online slot. In this case, the high hit-rate from the Megaways layout helps to keep it from getting out of hand. However, you also have to deal with the fact that the features pack a ton of value. This runs the volatility up a bit. Overall, these two elements settle together for a volatility that’s just slightly above the average.

As a Megaways game, the number of winning ways can change a lot between spins. Along these lines, basing payouts on the number of ways to win would make much sense. Instead, in this slot, your wins are all multiples of however much you’re betting. That’s how we’ll describe the wins below. However, in the pay table, they are actually listed as currency amounts.

Gameplay and Features for the Outlaw Video Slot

In a genre with not as much flexibility as this one, the gameplay is often what differentiates titles the most. A good example of that is the Deadly 5 slot that bases everything on a set of five characters. With Big Time Gaming and their Outlaw online slot, they make sure to go their own way with the play style. This title centers around a few features that add a lot more flavor than you sometimes get to the Megaways layout. As a result, the action is high as it should be for a Wild West–themed slot.

Outlaw Full Reel Wilds

Full Reel Wild Symbols

The two main characters of this game are the sheriff and the outlaw. This is often the basis of many Western stories, so we think it’s a good way to set things up. However, you get to see this right away from BTG with how the wild symbols work.

When they appear, they can cover the entire reel. However, the sheriff has an advantage over the outlaw. That’s because the sheriff works as a 7x wild multiplier when it appears. Any winning combination that includes at least one of them will have its base value multiplied by seven. Additionally, you can have more than one of these in the same winning combination. When that happens, the multipliers are added together instead of multiplied.

Double the Scatter Symbols

An important mechanic we want to point out is the way the scatters work. This is so important because it’s so atypical. While we enjoy the fact that BTG stepped outside of the box, we think they could have done a better job of explaining this in a way that is clear to players the first time they see it.

The crossed pistols are the scatter, and you can see them in two colors: silver and gold. However, the silver are a lot more common because the gold has an extra effect as what’s called a megascatter in this title.

You only need three total scatters of any color to activate the bonus features, which we’ll look at below. With that said, having a golden megascatter in that bunch gives you some extras that you won’t get otherwise.

Outlaw Free Spins

Outlaw Free Spins

Big Time Gaming included two types of free spins in the Outlaw video slot. First up is the Fallen Angels free spins. You get seven free turns with this mode. One of the card rank symbols is chosen at random to become a sticky wild on the middle four reels. When it shows up, it stays in place and locks the number of symbols in place for the rest of the spins for that reel. Note that if you fill a reel with sticky wilds, three additional free spins are added.

Additionally, you can earn the Dizzy in the Head free spins mode instead. With this mode, players are given eight free spins instead. You can pick up a multiplier ranging from 11x to 77x on each and every spin. On top of that, three, four or five scatters (any type) add an extra four, six or eight free turns, respectively.

When you have a gold scatter that helps to activate the feature, you get the enhanced free spins. For the Fallen Angel version, either the skull, flower, bottle or cactus mid-tier symbols will also be a sticky wild. Also, you can get extra multipliers that go much higher in the Dizzy in the Head feature. Massive multipliers in the latter can go as high as 777x, which are some of the largest we’ve ever seen, especially in a Megaways slot.

How to Win at Outlaw

In this Megaways slot, the volatility is higher than average because of the huge, jackpot-like value that the free spins can offer up. With that said, the wild reels and general high hit-rate of the Megaways format come together to help keep it from getting excessive. However, the volatility is above-average, which means the swings are as well.

To adjust to this, we advice choosing a bet size around 25 to 33 percent lower than what you would typically start with in a game you’re playing for the first time. For one, this helps to take the edge off of the swings. However, if you aren’t concerned with the volatility, you’re obviously free to play at any level you’re comfortable with.

You also have the option at any time to purchase your way into the free spins mode. This costs 70 times your total bet size for the regular free spins version. Additionally, players can jump straight into the enhanced option with a wager of 300 times their starting bet. Each of these are a higher volatility than the norm. Therefore, we have to suggest considering dropping your bet size down a lot to compensate.

Outlaw Payouts

Payout Structure for the Outlaw Online Slot

The purple skull looks really cool and pays out 10x for six of a kind. Additionally, you can win for just two of a kind of it. That’s the only symbol that pays for just two; the rest need a minimum of three. Six of a kind combinations of the red rose symbol gets you a 1.25x payout as well. From there, 0.5x wins are yours for six of the blue bottle or green cactus symbols.

From there, six card rank symbols are also made available. These come in two tiers of payouts and prizes. With the purple A, red K and blue Q symbols, the wins are worth 0.4x for six of a kind. Additionally, six of the green J, orange 10 or cyan 9 symbols earn you 0.3x payouts.

Overview

This title actually has a lot in common with the Wild West Gold Megaways game. However, the main difference is that the Outlaw slot allows for some really massive top payouts thanks to the way the features work. We can’t think of many other wild west-themed or Megaways-styled titles that do this. Along these lines, Big Time Gaming has created a title here that really has its own place in the industry. To do that at all is impressive in and of itself.
