Even Money Wagers
The even money wagers are exactly what they sound like: They are straightforward bets that pay out at 1:1. That means if you wager €5 and win, then you profit €5. These bets have a really low volatility, the lowest in the game, and they’re really easy to understand.
Here is a quick overview of all of the even money bets in European Roulette:
- Even – This is a wager on all of the even numbers (eg: 2, 4, 6, 8…). However, this does not include the green zero.
- Odd – Likewise, this is a bet on the odd numbers (eg: 1, 3, 5, 7…).
- Red – Each number has a red, black or green background. This is a wager on the half of the numbers 1-36 with a red background.
- Black – Along the same lines, this wager is on all of the numbers with a background that is black.
- 1-18 and 19-36 – These are pretty self-explanatory. However, you win if the number that hits is in the given range.

Other Low-volatility Wagers
We have a few other wagers that have a pretty low volatility, but it’s not as low as the even money bets. They are also considered “outside” bets, meaning that they happen “outside” of the grid of numbers.
- Column Wagers – Three boxes are shown on the far end of the columns of numbers labeled “2to1.” These are for the column wagers. They win if a number lands on that given column, and they pay out at 2:1 as you might suspect given the label.
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd Thirds – These three wagers correspond to the ranges 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36. On these bets, if the winning number is in the range you have wagered on, then you win. Again, the payout is 2:1.
That covers all of the outside wagers. Everything from here on out is considered an “inside bet,” and that’s because they happen “inside” of the number grid.
The Basics of Inside Wagers
The inside wagers are about betting on specific numbers and small sets of numbers. They have a higher level of volatility based on how few numbers they target. In what follows, we’ll first take a look at the most basic of these so that you can get a feel for them.
- Straight Up – This is a bet on a single wager. Put your chips in the center of the spot for the number you want to wager on to bet. This pays out at a rate of 35:1.
- Split – A split is when you bet on two numbers that are horizontally or vertically adjacent. You can make this bet by putting your chips on the line that separates the two table spots. This wins on either of the two numbers with a payout of 17:1.
- Street – The short rows of three numbers each on the table of numbers can be wagered on. Additionally, this wins if you hit any of the three numbers in question. To make this wager, place your chips on the line in the middle of the top of the row. Street wagers pay at 11:1.
- Corner – With corner bets, you find four numbers that form a square on the grid. This is a wager on all four of those with your chips placed on the corner that the four of them share. Corner bets offer a payout of 8:1.
Generally speaking, these are the highest-volatility wagers in the game. They are the direct contrast to the even money and 2:1 bets. However, a few others wagers are available with a more medium-level volatility like these do, and we’ll look at them next.
Advanced Inside Bets
If you want something slightly more complicated, you’re in luck. We have a few other wagers to follow that we recommend new players only make after they’re comfortable with the rest of the game. Here’s an overview:
- Double Street – This is a bet on two adjacent “street” wagers from the above. You place your chips on the top corner that joins the two of them, and that gives you six numbers to win from. The payout is 5:1 as a result.
- Trio – There are two different trio wagers that are bets on two different clusters that include the green zero. You can bet on the 0-1-2 cluster or the 0-2-3 cluster by placing your chips on the corner they all share. These pay at a rate of 11:1 just like the street bets.
- Basket – Also known as a “first four,” you can also bet on the 0-1-2-3 cluster. Since it’s a bet on four numbers, it has the same payout of 8:1 like the corner bet. Place this wager by putting your chips on the top edge of where the 0 and 1 meet.
These are a little trickier to learn, but they’re pretty intuitive once you’ve learned the other bets we covered first.
How to Win at European Roulette
As we’ve mentioned above, every single wager we listed above has the same house edge of about 2.7 percent. However, the volatility of those bets can vary greatly.
In general, if a bet in this game has a higher payout rate, it has a higher volatility as well. To adjust, you should use smaller bet sizes with high-volatility wagers. Additionally, you can use somewhat larger bet sizes with low-volatility bets. That’s the way to adjust to how this game works from that perspective.
However, you can also mix and match these to create your own strategies and betting patterns. For example, mixing a small wager on a straight-up bet along with a larger wager on a 2:1 is one way to go about that.
